William got a butterfly kit for Christmas and with Spring in full swing, we decided to send off for our very own jar of caterpillars. We received 10 in the mail and within 2 weeks the caterpillars had spun their cocoons. It wasn't long before we had 10 painted lady butterflies. I was able to take the habitat to preschool and show the kids there before taking them on the road a second time to release them at Williams kindergarten playground. His class watched as 5 of the butterflies flew off into the woods to begin their new life of freedom. The other 5 were a little more hesitant to leave the safety of the cage with 20 five and six-year-olds hovering nearby, so they came home with us and were released in our backyard.
